We at Storage World have a story to tell. Our story is an adventure encompassing what business is all about—people and purpose. The story begins with the president of
Express Mobile Storage, Jack Johnson:
My name is Jack Johnson, and I am
not the CEO of our company. As our story unfolds, I will introduce you to our Chief Executive Officer.
I grew up on a small farm in Alabama, where we raised the usual cows and chickens and such. My father was not a businessman (he worked for the state Highway Department), and I had little exposure to business. Nevertheless, at 21, I had an inkling that I would one day be a businessman. At 23, I went a step further with my dream and told my wife, Teri, that we would start a business at age 33. We did start the business with no funds and three children. That part of the adventure was scary and difficult for many years….I’ve decided that is why we call it
work.
Later, in 1998, we began Storage World, a conventional self-storage company, with our first facility in Alabama (we have since sold it and operate on Atlanta’s south side). We made a lot of mistakes in those days and money was tight. It was in the midst of a long, dry valley—which had begun in mid-1996 and lasted six years—that I felt life should not be so difficult in work that was “supposed to be my bent.” But, in the valley I clearly saw my need and desire to relinquish my business—especially my business—to the One who had given me my calling in the first place. I longed to destroy the duality of my heart and marshal my dreams and abilities in a single direction, personally and professionally. So, I prayed, asking Jesus Christ to be the CEO of our company.
Of course, I have friends and fellow business people who do not believe as I do, but excluding this “inner” part of my adventure would be insincere. Maybe you have reservations about what I am saying, but this is our story after all, and the story of our business. The business itself, our team-player approach and our desire to serve the community were forged in the valley, and from that place the story continues.

My long-ago business dreams are realized in
Express Mobile Storage. In 2002, we began to think of expanding our business to mobile capability, in order to offer more convenience to our customers. However, the timing was not right for my family, and we postponed the idea. Then, in 2006, we pulled the file of thoughts and sketches and began tinkering with the plan of developing our own lift, capable of handling very large storage containers horizontally and gently. Using the latest technology, the lift is designed to move and protect our customers’ stored valuables. Amazingly, in Fall 2009, we dedicated our patented lift at a special dinner and ceremony with the company team, family, friends and supporters.
Believing we have the best mobile system in the market at large, we offered the mobile service to the neighborhoods we serve in Atlanta. We built our three user-friendly facilities and operate them today. Besides being sparkling clean and attractive, our facilities are designed to allow tractor-trailer moving company trucks. Express Mobile delivers a container to home or business at the customer’s convenience, allowing ample time for pick-up and no-rush packing. Gone are the hassles of renting and driving trucks, awkward ramps, fueling up and hurry. Our unique design accommodates a huge container, the fullest width allowable by highway regulations, and is structurally engineered to safely handle five tons, far surpassing moving and storage industry standards. Our customers get more space at no extra cost! Plus, we offer our mobile service as a move-in method to our conventional facilities or the option of storing in the container. You decide the best storage plan and services to meet your needs.
Many capable people make up our Storage World team. Tracy Johnson, our area manager, brings her experience to ensure cleanliness, order and preplanning for you, the customer. Our team, which is more like family, is intentional about doing what is best for our customers and investors. Since we agree to function as a team, we have low turnover, and trust and loyalty bear out in the company culture.

As president of Storage World, I follow the servant-leader model, a leadership style for which I am well-suited. I enjoy seeing our people think and use their talents to benefit the work environment. Since December 2009, we have subscribed to High Commitment and High Performance (HCHP), a company-building strategy according to the book by the same name by Michael Beer, PhD. World-renowned companies have implemented HCHP since the late sixties, when Dr. Beer began his career with Corning Company. At the heart of Beer’s methodology is knowing people and how they are wired. The HCHP model also assumes simple tenets of good business: empowering employees and earning their trust, as well as fostering respect and compassion for customers. Utilizing the HCHP model is making us a better organization and a healthier place to work. We believe the effort required to build a company on the servant-leader and HCHP models is worth it to us and to our customers.
